How much does it cost?
I charge .022¢ for light to medium density per square inch and .03¢ for heavier density. How do you figure out the cost?
Take the width inches times the length inches for a total. Then multiply that times .022. For example, 60” x 72” = 4320 square inches. Then 4320 x .022 = $95.04.
What does E2E mean?
It simply means Edge to Edge. The quilting is a long continuous pattern that goes from one side of the quilt to the other.
Why is there a minimum charge?
Small quilts take as much time to prep and load as larger ones. Therefore, to compensate for my time, the minimum charge is $40.
Do you provide batting?
I carry Quilters Dream Select and Request cotton batting. It is competitively priced with packaging in stores. The advantage is you don’t pay to ship it and you don’t have to trim it down. Quilters Dream is a high quality cotton batting and only available through quilt shops or independent dealers. It doesn’t have scrim (a thin polyester film to hold the cotton together) however, it doesn’t bunch or ball up when washed. I can order specific batting if you prefer.
Why do you use all cotton batting?
I’ve been told I’m a purest. I want ALL cotton in my quilt because it allows it to breath yet be warm due to all the layers. The more polyester the more it traps your heat and it makes you sweat. It’s hard to imagine, but getting sweaty makes you cold, that’s the body’s way of cooling you down. So, if I’m covered with a quilt that means I’m cold and I don’t want to sweat.
Will you use my batting?
Of course I will! Be careful if you go to stores that carry Hobbs “All Cotton”. If you look closely at the package it states it is 80 cotton and 20 polyester.
What batting is best for my quilt?
That is a difficult question. It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. Do you want a lot of loft? Do you want it to be really warm or cool? I suggest doing some reading up on different types of I’ll be happy to discuss it with you. As a general rule I go for all cotton and vary the weight of the cotton.
What kind of thread do you use?
Speaking of being a purist, I use either King Tut Egyptian Cotton or Signature All Cotton. I use cotton because it is going to shrink with the cottons in your quilt when washed. I’ve had quilts over 10 years that have all cotton thread and have been washed a LOT and they are still holding fast.
What colors of thread do you have?
I currently have 70 colors and I’m continually adding.
Why is there a different cost for different pantographs?
Different pantos have different densities. The denser the pattern the more thread it uses the longer it takes to quilt.
Do different densities make the quilt feel different?
YES! The denser the pattern the less the quilt will drape. It also has a lot of thread and it makes the quilt heavier. It’s amazing the difference it makes in the weight!
Why does the back and batting need to be bigger than the quilt top?
I “load” your backing onto my quilting table and I need fabric to pin the top and bottoms to the leaders (which is long fabric) attached to poles. The sides need to be wider because the top can shift during quilting and I need room in case of shifting. If for some reason you are short on backing, let me know and I will see if I can work with it. Also you can always sew on some other type of fabric on the sides or tops to give me something to pin to.
