MORE ABOUT ME
Hi, I’m Debbie. I’m the quilter and designer behind Spare Threads Quilting in Statesboro, Georgia.
I love making quilts, but what really interests me is design—figuring out what a quilt needs to make it work. I notice color, balance, movement and the little details that can take a quilt from perfectly fine to something special. I’ve been known to take something apart and redo it because two points were bothering me, move blocks around until the color balance feels right, or spend entirely too long deciding which quilting design belongs on a particular quilt.
That attention to detail carries through everything I do at Spare Threads.
Memory quilts became a natural fit.
Working with clothing adds another layer to quiltmaking that I especially enjoy. I’m not starting with a coordinated bundle of fabric from a quilt shop. I’m starting with somebody’s real clothes—with different colors, textures, prints and histories—and figuring out how to make them work together.
I don't want the finished quilt to look like clothing that happened to be sewn together. I want it to look like a quilt someone would choose even before they knew the story behind it.
That philosophy became the heart of my memory-quilt work:
Designed, not assembled.
I’m also a longarm quilter.
Not every quilt that comes into my studio was made by me—and I like that.
I enjoy seeing what other quilters create and choosing quilting that complements their work rather than competes with it. Whether the quilt needs something quiet and textural or a design with a little more personality, I consider the piecing, fabrics and overall style before choosing a direction.
If you already know exactly what you want, wonderful. If you don't, I'm happy to help you decide.
Made by one pair of hands.
Spare Threads is a one-person business. When you contact me, you're talking to the person who will actually work on your quilt.
I design, cut, piece, longarm quilt and finish my memory quilts myself. I also make a changing collection of finished quilts simply because I still love making quilts for the joy of seeing an idea become something real.
My studio isn't a production line, and I don't want it to become one.
I want to make good quilts, do work I'm proud to put my name on, and send something home that makes you glad you trusted me with it.
That’s Spare Threads
